About this deal

Note worthy is that there is nowhere really a comparison between the 4.2 and 4.1, so I wonder where this niche group draws their conclusions from. AMT (Air Motion Transformer) Inverter: The Wharfedale EVO 4.1 Bookshelf speaker uses a specially designed 1,1875" x 2,375" AMT (Air Motion Transformer) transducer for his own silky high frequency reproduction. The design of the AMT makes it possible to move a higher air volume during implementation than with a conventional soft dome tid. This higher pressure, which is stimulated by the principles of the AMT design, offers improved HF display of point sources with lower deformation properties than conventional tweeters. This is reflected in the stunning and pure brightness of the musical performance of all EVO 4.1 bookshelf speakers.

Same design formula that applies to the 4.2 is used beyond the 4.2 up to the largest floorstander in the series. Since it is in the crossover region, seems to me they could have pulled that down by adjusting the filter/crossover point but they chose not to do so. It's striking that when we start playing Dune in 5.1 on the Evo 4.4 surround system, it immediately prompts us to question whether there is any need for Dolby Atmos. Of course, there is, but it’s a great reminder that if you have quality speakers capable of detailed precision and fluid transparency, you don’t need to go all-in on rears and height channels to have a seriously immersive home system. This symbiosis is immediately evident from the inclusion of Air Motion Transformer tweeters across all the models in the Evo series, a technology usually found in pricier products.

Unboxing and Initial Impressions

The highly advanced AMT (Air Motion Transformer) tweeter delivers class-leading detail and precision through its high-tech design. By squeezing the air between sound plates, the EVO 4.1 offers a highly consistent and precise top end that’s fast to respond to all types of music – making your favourite tunes sound more believable than ever. With such a narrow directivity I would normally say "stay at tweeter axis" but in this case, I probed to see if any other response is better with respect to resonance and there is: If I listen to something like house or trance without vocals they can produce a lot of detail, a wide soundstage, and a nice sparkle at the extreme top end. They definitely appeal more with this sort of music. But even then it's a little too warm sounding for my liking. I'm not sure if a longer run in will improve things, they just seem like too much is missing. Maybe the Evo 4.2 with the dome mid range provides what is missing with these. I'd be interested in other experiences with these speakers. Perhaps they need partnering with a brighter sounding amp.

With the same class-leading tech as the multi-award-winning EVO 4.4, the Wharfedale EVO 4.1 speakers champion the compact market. Measurements that you are about to see were performed using the Klippel Near-field Scanner (NFS). This is a robotic measurement system that analyzes the speaker all around and is able (using advanced mathematics and dual scan) to subtract room reflections (so where I measure it doesn't matter). It also measures the speaker at close distance ("near-field") which sharply reduces the impact of room noise. Both of these factors enable testing in ordinary rooms yet results that can be more accurate than an anechoic chamber. In a nutshell, the measurements show the actual sound coming out of the speaker independent of the room. Slot-Loaded Distributed Port Design: The EVO 4.1 uses a slot-loaded distributed port design, wherein the internal gate tube opens in a slot that is formed between the speaker cabinet and the base. This reduces turbulence and audible "chuffing" of conventional gate systems, caused by the sudden burst of high-pressure air in low pressure in space. Another advantage is the increased efficiency of the energy transfer of the bass reflex tuning to the space. Both ends of the gate are provided with a semi-parabolic input and output curve that controls the air flow through the gate tube and allows a higher air volume into the system loaded with slots for a further improvement of the low-frequency output performance of the speaker.Air Motion Transformer tweeters are used across all the models in the Evo series (Image credit: Future) Wharfedale Evo 4 range of loudspeakers offer powerful high fidelity for an affordable price. One of the most recent ranges from the highly regarded brand, EVO4 represent the new benchmark for Wharfedale. Undoubtedly handsome, and built for purpose, the EVO4 loudspeakers are aided with groundbreaking technologies for an uncompromising musical performance. Optimized crossover network: the output of the tweeter and the woofer is carefully combined by a thoroughly investigated crossover that has been developed using Wharfedale's computer aided optimization technology. Every crossover is carefully evaluated using a wide range of music, the emphasis on the lifelike representation of voices and instruments in addition to the dynamics of the musical version.

The Wharfedale EVO4.1 Stands are purpose-designed for the Wharfedale EVO4.1 standmount (or bookshelf) loudspeakers. The bass extension of the EVO4 is then expanded and improved by the most advanced version of the Wharfedales Signature Slot-Loaded Bassport so far. The SLPP or Slot Loaded Profiled Port is designed to extend the bass performance of the speakers using a carefully designed port in the speaker's basis, making the evo4 speakers a lot of forgiving people with their placement, where most speakers would struggle With the bass outlet, the EVO4s will still shine. Characteristics If you’re thinking that any speaker that stands 106cm tall and has twin 15cm bass drivers should deliver plenty in the way of bass, you’d be right. Expectations are high when you go up from a few hundred dollars and are dealing with a small bookshelf speaker. I am afraid Wharfedale seems to have gone for marketing sound here rather than high fidelity. There is no excuse for that resonances in treble other than to please people in short-term listening and showroom setting. It is a shame as I think they could have corrected for it. There are some positives in the form of the passive radiator that keeps internal resonances inside the box. And decent directivity index allowing equalization.

EVO4.1 Stands

Featuring a Kevlar woofer cone, the EVO 4.1 delivers class-leading precision. From the lifelike vocals to punchier instrumentals, the EVO 4.1 remains true to your music. Downwards firing bass ports integrate better with your room and also make the speakers easier to position as they can be placed closer to a rear wall.

The bass energy in the enclosure is under high pressure. In conventional port designs, when the bass waves abruptly exit into the low-pressure room, air turbulence occurs. This turbulence wastes bass and often causes annoying "chuffing" or popping sounds, sometimes referred to as port noise. For a finely tuning the crossover section between the drivers, EVO4 speakers are enhanced with Computer Aided Optimisation Technology. This sophisticated crossover array is the product of scrupulous listening testing to ensure a seamless crossover, improved transparency and great phase consistency. Kevlar Cones

Introduction

EVO4's AMT high-frequency unit produces sound in a completely different way than conventional dome testers. The ribbon technology uses a large, pleated, lightweight diaphragm, driven by a series of magnets. This is an extremely efficient and accurate method to create high-frequency sound, so that the EVO4 series has an open and smooth sounding top, without being too bright and hard. Tweeter resonance seems to also be responsible for distortion in the 2 to 4 kHz. So would have definitely been nice if that was fixed in the design. Champions of accessible loudspeaker design, Wharfedale Evo 4 series revisits what can be accomplished at such down-to-earth price points with incredible clarity and precision. Launched in 2019, the EVO4 range presents two bookshelf speakers (Evo 4.1 and 4.2), two floorstanders (Evo 4.3 and 4.4) and a centre speaker designed for home cinema use (4.C).
